Fractures and Trauma

During the course of our busy lives, accidents can happen, occasionally resulting in fractures. Quite often a fracture can be treated with a simple plaster, sling or bandage, without the need of surgery or hospitalisation.

We manage fractures for upper and lower limbs in people of all ages, including children and the elderly, and are happy to discuss this further with you.

Shoulders

Shoulder Problems

Overuse and trauma are the most common causes of shoulder problems. Inflammatory diseases such as arthritis and bursitis may develop over time.

Rotating Cuff

Rotating cuff injuries are most commonly observed in athletes who frequenly use a swinging or overhead throwing motion (such as baseball pitchers and tennis players), or those in occupations that require them to frequently reach and lift.

We are happy to discuss the suitable procedure options with you.

Hip

Hip Replacement Surgery

Hip replacements are generally considered one of the most successful surgical procedures in terms of helping restore quality of life, and are commonly performed in Australia and around the world.

Osteoarthritis (wearing out of the cartilage in the hip joint) is the most common indication for hip replacement surgery. Other indications include following trauma, such as a hip fracture, or when the blood suply to the hip bone (femur) fails.

Hip replacements are performed as an inpatient in hospital, which will usually require a post operative stay of 3-5 days on average. There are some very specific restrictions that need to be adhered to after the surgery which our staff can discuss with you.

Revision Hip Surgery

With an increase in life expectancy and the number of hip replacement operations performed, the numbers of joint replacements that wear out and need to be fixed surgically are growing. These operations can be extremely difficult and complicated. Rest assured that our surgical team has been thoroughly trained to perform these type of procedures.

We would be happy to discuss the reasons for joint replacements wearing out with you.

Knee

Knee Arthroscopy

Knees are exposed to a variety of forces, from simple twisting in everyday life to impacts on a sporting field. As the knee joint is complex, it can be injured in many ways.

The knee can be readily accessed by arthroscopy surgery (key-hole), making it relatively quick and painless in amenable cases. This type of surgery is often a day procedure with a reasonably quick return to normal function.

We provide a variety of arthroscopic knee procedures which we are happy to discuss with you.

Knee Osteotomy (Realignment) Surgery

In young people, joint replacement surgery may not be the best option to treat painful diseases of the knees.

In those people that meet the criteria, surgery that cuts the bones around the knee joint and helps realign the forces across the knee may be the best option for their disease. It is less painful than knee replacement surgery, and can delay joint replacement for up to ten years.

We are happy to discuss rehabilitation for this type of surgery with you.

Knee Replacement Surgery

Knee replacement surgery is being increasingly performed in Australia and the rest of the world for painful conditions that affect knees, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and traumatic injuries.

As total knee replacement surgery is a massive undertaking, involving intensive rehabilitation, and quite painful, it generally isn’t considered until non-operative measures have been exhausted. The inpatient stay is for about 3-5 days.

To maximise the longevity of the implant, activities after the joint replacement do need to be modified. We are happy to discuss the procedure and rehabilitation with you in greater detail.

Revision Knee Replacement

This is where part or all of the previous knee replacement needs to be fixed surgically. This type of operation can be a relatively minor if only making minor adjustments, however it can also be a major and very difficult procedure.

We are happy to discuss the different types of revision knee replacement operations and rehabilitations, with you.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Reconstruction

One of the most common indications for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is a feeling of instability of the knee resulting from a tear in the ACL which doesn’t heal. (The ACL is a strong rope like structure running from the centre of the knee running from the femur to the tibia, the long bones of the leg). This is a common surgical procedure, and can be done as arthroscopic surgery (key-hole).

We are happy to discuss this procedure with you further.

Uni Condylar Knee Replacement

This is where only one part of the knee joint is replaced through a smaller incision than would normally be used for a total knee replacement.

We are happy to discuss the suitability of this type of surgery with you.
